SPECIAL GUESTS FROM THE PAST
(The future special guest varies and will be announced on social media before the concert).
SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE
(voice-over)
Christopher Lee, the "towering" British film actor who has lent his good looks to a whole series of
villains - from Dracula to Saruman in "Der Herr der Ringe" - his good looks,
his Shakespearean voice and aristocratic presence, opened this concert series with Star Entertainment.
Lee was 35 years old when his breakthrough came in 1957 with
Terence Fisher's British horror film "The Curse of Frankenstein" in 1957. In it he played
the creature. But it was only a year later, when he played the title role with lascivious sex appeal in Fisher's
"Dracula", his cinematic identity was forever associated with Bram Stoker's noble,
voracious vampire. Despite his pre-eminent status as a horror icon
only around fifteen of his 250 or so film and television appearances were in this genre,
including at least ten appearances as Dracula. Lee continued acting into the
90s, appearing in Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" and turning his hand to acting as the Sith Lord in the
the dark side in the "Star Wars" franchise.
He played "Saruman" in "Der Herr der Ringe" and reprised his role as the evil
wizard in Peter Jackson's "Der Hobbit" trilogy. "What Professor T olkien has achieved is
unique in the literature of my lifetime. In my opinion, he has even reached the pinnacle
of literary invention of all time. There has never been anything like it
and probably never will be." - Christopher Lee
WILLIAM KIRCHER
William Kircher played the dwarf Bifur in the three film adaptations of "The Hobbit":
"An Unexpected Journey", "The Desolation of Smaug" and "The Battle of the Five Armies". He is
famous for surviving the three films with an orc axe in his forehead. In the
Tolkien language Khuzdul, he is really a Khuzd Belkul, which means "Mighty Dwarf". "The Hobbit" tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, who leads a group of
dwarves on an unexpected journey to retrieve their gold from a dragon.
In the films, William Kircher plays the warrior and toymaker Bifur
as a dwarf as well as other roles such as "Tom the Troll".
J. R. R. TOLKIEN
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) became world-famous with his novel cycle "Der Herr der Ringe". Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the history of his
fictional realm of Middle-earth. It was not only George Lucas who was clearly inspired for his
his "Star Wars" series. His stories also served as a template for many other
works, in particular the new film adaptation by Peter Jackson triggered a renaissance of the
Ring cult. This was continued in the film trilogy "Der Hobbit".
J.R.R. discovered his love of languages at an early age. Welsh, Old English, Greek,
French and German were among his favourite subjects at school.
After the death of his mother, Tolkien was first raised by an aunt and later by a foster family.
From 1911, he studied at Exeter College in Oxford, graduating in 1915
and went to war in 1918. In 1925, Tolkien was appointed professor at the
Oxford University, where his idea for The Hobbit was born. Originally intended as
entertainment for his children and initially written without the idea of commercial
publication, The Hobbit was submitted by a former student of Tolkien's to the publisher Allen & Unwin, who published the story in 1937.
Although "The Little Hobbit" was not a bestseller, there were requests for a sequel to the story.
of the story. Tolkien wrote "Der Herr der Ringe" from 1936 to 1949. The first two volumes
were published in 1954 - a cult was born. Tolkien died in 1973 at the age of 81.
After his death, his son Christopher took care of the publication of further
stories from Middle-earth. Around 25 years after his death, production began on the
film trilogy "The Lord of the Rings" began with a budget of 190 million dollars. It became
one of the most successful film productions of all time.
